Wound Care Program

The Wound Care Program at Muhlenberg is a comprehensive outpatient center designed to prevent and treat chronic or hard-to-heal wounds. Led by Dr. Gary Breitbart, a board-certified vascular surgeon, our multidisciplinary team consists of health care professionals working together in collaboration to create an atmosphere of trust and comfort while delivering comprehensive wound management.

Who is a good candidate?
If you are one of nearly 5 million Americans suffering from a chronic or non-healing wound or a wound that has not responded to prior treatment, the Wound Care Program can help you. At the Wound Care Program, physicians provide comprehensive management for your wound while your primary physician continues to treat the underlying condition and provide for your overall care.

Types of wounds treated at the center
Types of wounds most frequently seen and treated at the Wound Care Program are:

  • Non healing wounds
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Chronic venous stasis ulcers
  • Decubitus ulcers
  • Radiation-induced bone and soft tissue injuries
  • Chronic osteomyelitis
  • Necrotizing soft tissue injuries
  • Compromised skin flaps


What causes these types of wounds?

Chronic and hard-to-heal wounds can be difficult to treat for various reasons. A few of the major causes can be:

  • Diabetes
  • Compromised Blood Flow
  • Infection
  • Inadequate or Poor Nutrition
  • Unusual Pressure
  • Chronic Swelling
  • Effects of Radiation
  • Venous Disease


What are some of the treatments utilized to care for these wounds?

All treatments vary from case-to-case, but the most common treatments include both medical and surgical care combined with the advanced wound care technology. Treatments include:

  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO)
  • Negative pressure therapy
  • Bioengineered skin substitutes
  • Orthotics and off-loading (Braces)
  • Advanced dressing materials
  • Growth factors


What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

HBO therapy is a medical treatment that enhances the body’s natural healing and strengthens the immune system. HBO is an effective treatment option for most common wounds.

The Wound Care Program at Muhlenberg is conveniently located to the neighboring areas of Plainfield, Scotch Plains, Woodbridge, Metuchen, Somerset, Iselin, Rahway, Westfield and Edison. It is easily accessed from the NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and other major freeways.
