Cancer is a disease that affects entire families, not only the person who is sick. At Muhlenberg, care for those with cancer includes diagnosis, treatment, education and support, which extend to family and friends.

Treatment methods vary; depending upon each patient's individual needs and may include surgical intervention, chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. In addition, stem cell transplantation, the most advanced technology of its kind, is available for patients with Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, some of the acute leukemias, breast cancer, certain testicular tumors and multiple myelomas. The hospital also maintains a Platelet Apheresis Donor Center.

On a dedicated Oncology Unit, board-certified physicians are assisted by registered nurses certified in chemotherapy. An interdisciplinary oncology team and a certified tumor registrar also are available. Meetings on the unit include patients, family, medical staff, social workers and clergy to provide an open dialogue regarding the disease process and its impact on patients and those close to them.

Recognizing that education and early detection are vital to prevent and treat cancer, Muhlenberg works in conjunction with the American Cancer Society to coordinate screenings and lectures.

To enable people to share concerns and receive feedback from others, who are in similar circumstances, support groups meet regularly. (See Support Groups, page 27)

For those facing a terminal illness, Muhlenberg's Hospice Program offers support, care and comfort for the patient and those affected by his or her illness. (See also Breast Health and Mammography Center, and Home Care)
