Pulmonologists at Muhlenberg help those who have breathing problems due to such lung diseases as asthma, pneumonia, emphysema, pleurisy and bronchitis. Respiratory services, provided around the clock, 365 days a year, by experienced physicians and technical personnel, include administration of bronchodilator medications by aerosol, ventilator care, non-invasive ventilation, monitoring and delivery of oxygen, chest physical therapy and instruction in the use of metered dose inhalers.
The Bonnie Sue Kaplan Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, conducted through the Department of Respiratory Therapy, offers the latest in computerized technology to diagnose and treat patients with chronic lung disease. Pulmonary function testing, which can be conducted at the patient's bedside if necessary, assesses breathing capacity and the efficacy of bronchodilator aerosol therapy, and screens for early disease and pulmonary impairment. Through the use of special bicycle and/or treadmill apparatus, a patient's capacity for exercise can be determined. The department also employs high-tech video imaging in its outpatient bronchoscopy unit. Most tests, studies and treatments are covered by Medicare and other third party payers.
Respiratory Therapy also conducts a six-week outpatient program that provides counseling, education and monitored exercise. Staff is available for public education presentations and pulmonary function screenings at health fairs.
