Maternal and Child Health
(908) 668-2353Muhlenberg's Fitch Pavilion houses maternity and nursery units for mothers and babies. The hospital's ChildBirth Center features eight labor/delivery/recovery rooms that allow mothers to remain in the same room for all phases of childbirth. Each is custom decorated, spacious and comfortable, with a special labor and delivery bed, a private bathroom with shower, a television and a phone. Traditional labor and delivery rooms also are available.
Muhlenberg boasts one of the lowest Cesarean section rates in New Jersey and one of the highest VBAC rates (vaginal deliveries for mothers who have previously had a C-section).
Should complications arise, a team of highly skilled professionals is on hand in the Special Care Nursery, which employs state-of-the-art technology. Experienced, board certified Pediatricians are on-site and available 24 hours a day.
The maternity unit is designed so that mother and baby can be together around the clock. Fathers who have attended classes may spend the first night with mom and baby in the hospital. A trained nursing staff cares for newborns in the adjacent nursery.
Special visiting hours for siblings and grandparents are offered.
Childbirth preparation classes including Lamaze, infant care, breast-feeding and refresher courses, are offered. Muhlenberg also provides genetic counseling services.
