Cardiac Services

While cardiac disease is still the number one killer in America today, we know more about it than ever before.

Emergency care for those with heart problems can begin when our Mobile Intensive Care team arrives at the scene to treat a person. Sophisticated equipment allows paramedics to communicate directly with the emergency room physician so that the moment a patient enters Muhlenberg's Emergency Department treatment can begin immediately.

Outstanding diagnostic capabilities provide the backbone of Muhlenberg's comprehensive cardiac program, both on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Non-invasive (nonsurgical) testing for patients with such problems as arrhythmias, hypertension, chest pain and shortness of breath is conducted using electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, stress tests, holter monitoring, pacemaker evaluation and vascular studies, all of which assess heart rate, heart rhythm and blood flow. State-of-the-art biomedical technology enables the most accurate interpretation of tests by a highly qualified team of cardiologists and vascular surgeons.

Muhlenberg's Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory has treated more than 6,300 high and low-risk patients. A team comprised of registered nurses, registered radiology technicians and certified cardiovascular technologists work closely with cardiologists to diagnose coronary artery disease, valve disease and heart muscle problems, as well as manage life-threatening emergencies. Using high-tech digital imaging, cardiologists are able to see into the heart and the arteries.

People who require hospitalization for heart problems are cared for on a newly renovated Cardiac Care Unit, where sophisticated equipment and experienced nurses are available 24 hours a day.

For those patients who would benefit from supervised exercise and nutritional counseling, cardiac rehabilitation is provided. (Cardio Pulmonary Rehabilitation)
