Providing the Care You Need

Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center is a 362 bed acute care faciliprograms_180ty that provides inpatient and outpatient services in all major medical specialties and houses the Muhlenberg School of Nursing, Medical Imaging and Therapeutic Sciences. In addition, special services include the Bariatric Surgery Center, Wound Care Center, Anorectal Physiology Laboratory and the Breast Health and Mammography Center. Since 1877, Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center, a university affiliated teaching hospital, has been providing inpatient and outpatient health care services.

Colon and Rectal Surgery
Patients with illnesses or injuries related to colon rectal or urological problems are placed on a dedicated unit where physicians and nurses who specialize in these disorders provide the most modern diagnostic tests and treatments. Both medical and surgical management is available for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis; evaluation and management of defecation disorders and genetically transmitted colon rectal disease also is offered.

Minimally invasive surgical techniques include transanal surgery and laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery. Muhlenberg's Colon Rectal Surgery Division offers a nationally recognized residency teaching program for surgeons specializing in colon rectal disorders and is New Jersey's only training program for physicians who want to specialize in this area. The hospital also sponsors free colorectal screening kits to the community during the month of March. This screening is part of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the risks of colorectal cancer.

Bariatric Surgery
The mission of the Bariatric Surgery Center at Muhlenberg is to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of the morbidly obese. The Bariatric Surgery Center offers an extensive array of support services for potential Bariatric patients that include both careful preoperative care and long term postoperative patient management. Initially, potential patients will be asked to attend informational sessions to gain an understanding of the surgical options and the associated risks. After a thorough preoperative evaluation, patients will be prepared for surgery by a multidisciplinary team, including evaluation by the patient's primary physician, a gastroenterologist, a cardiologist, a pulmonologist, a nutritionist, as well as a psychological evaluation. Postoperatively, patients will have nutritional and psychological counseling, as well as biochemical surveillance.

The Wound Care Center
The Wound Care Center at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center is a comprehensive outpatient center designed to prevent and treat chronic or hard-to-heal wounds. Led by Dr. Gary Breitbart, a board-certified vascular surgeon, our multidisciplinary team consists of health care professionals working together in collaboration to create an atmosphere of trust and comfort while delivering comprehensive wound management.

Cardiac Surgery
Emergency care for those with heart problems can begin when our Mobile Intensive Care team arrives at the scene to treat a person. Sophisticated equipment allows paramedics to communicate directly with the emergency room physician so that the moment a patient enters Muhlenberg's Emergency Department treatment can begin immediately.

Outstanding diagnostic capabilities provide the backbone of Muhlenberg's comprehensive cardiac program, both on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Non-invasive (nonsurgical) testing for patients with such problems as arrhythmias, hypertension, chest pain and shortness of breath is conducted using electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, stress tests, holter monitoring, pacemaker evaluation and vascular studies, all of which assess heart rate, heart rhythm and blood flow. State-of-the-art biomedical technology enables the most accurate interpretation of tests by a highly qualified team of cardiologists and vascular surgeons.

Muhlenberg's Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory has treated more than 6,300 high and low-risk patients. A team comprised of registered nurses, registered radiology technicians and certified cardiovascular technologists work closely with cardiologists to diagnose coronary artery disease, valve disease and heart muscle problems, as well as manage life-threatening emergencies. Using high-tech digital imaging, cardiologists are able to see into the heart and the arteries.

People who require hospitalization for heart problems are cared for on a newly renovated Cardiac Care Unit, where sophisticated equipment and experienced nurses are available 24 hours a day.

For those patients who would benefit from supervised exercise and nutritional counseling, cardiac rehabilitation is provided.
